How top curl long layered hair in spirals?

Using a spiral curling iron makes them too tight and I look like a poodle but using a normal barrel does nothing. Any suggestions? Also, if I use rags or velcro rollers they indent my hair and hot rollers make the curls too big and not spirally enough.

Thanks!

The best way in the world to get spiral curls is with one of those Richard Caruso Molecular Hairsetters (the best hot rollers ever made, IMO...). Steam your roller and then place it a little less than halfway down the length of your hair. Now spiral the loose end of your hair around it until you get to the end, then roll the roller back up toward your scalp (that's why you start at about the halfway point of your hair). After your hair is set finger tousle or lightly comb your hair. Don't brush it! You'll brush the curls out. This method will get you gorgeous spiral curls.
